The side deck on our house covers the cistern. There is a hatch in the deck over the pump casing so we can pull the submersible for maintenance without moving the deck.

Aww! Look how polite Mom's flowers are! They are shading my tools. Keep up the hard work there Miss Petunia. I installed the thingamabob in the cistern and drilled a hole for the wire in the lid. I was happy to see that the probe stayed straight up and down. I was worried that it would attempt to float to the surface, but it seems to work without a weight attached to the bottom. Once the installation was final, the hole in the lid was sealed with silicone caulking.

I soldered the DE9 connector to the wires coming from the probe. It was a beautiful day to be working outside. Deck furniture, solder and sun mix rather nicely. I will call this mixture sundering. (Hmm...apparently that word is already taken. Let me get back to you on that.)

Can't beat the view off the deck as I work. Gotta love living on a farm!
